Description

Guardonix USB 3.0 Standard Edition

Guardonix USB 3.0 Standard Edition is a hardware USB write blocker designed for digital forensics, data storage analysis, and secure data acquisition and imaging.

The device is placed between the computer and the USB storage device being examined and hardware-assistedly blocks all write commands, protecting the source storage device's content from accidental or unauthorized modification.

Guardonix also acts as a USB connection stabilizer, reducing problems caused by bad sectors, unstable storage device operation, or incorrect responses from the source device.

The device's architecture separates communication between the computer and Guardonix from communication between Guardonix and the storage device being examined. In the event of a loss of source synchronization, communication with the storage device can be reinitialized without interrupting the connection on the computer side.

The manufacturer states that Guardonix can maintain an active connection with the computer even after the storage device being examined is physically disconnected during imaging. If the tested drive fails to respond at all, the Standard Edition automatically powers up the device after 60 seconds, allowing the data recovery process to continue.

The device is designed to work with non-proprietary USB mass storage devices.

Guardonix was developed by the Canadian company DeepSpar Data Recovery Systems, specializing in professional data recovery solutions

Available Versions/Models

Guardonix Standard Edition – the basic version designed primarily for hardware write blocking and stabilization of communication with the media.

Guardonix Professional Edition Upgrade – an extension implemented as a firmware upgrade that adds advanced features related to, among others, handling damaged media, analysis, read process control, and acquisition acceleration.

An optional Set of Adapters is available, including adapters for:
SATA HDDs,
SATA SSDs,
SD cards,
M.2 M-key PCIe/NVMe drives,
Apple PCIe 12- and 16-pin drives.

Required Software

Required Operating System: Windows 10 x64 or Windows 11 x64.
Guardonix works with applications running in the Windows environment and can be used as a hardware intermediary when working with imaging and forensic analysis software. The manufacturer provides its own Guardonix software/firmware components used for installation, configuration, monitoring, and logging of the device.
According to the manufacturer, Guardonix software and firmware updates are available free of charge.
The manufacturer does not indicate the need to purchase a separate license for external forensic software to use the basic write-blocking functionality.
The forensic software used to create the correct media image or its subsequent analysis can be selected independently; Guardonix acts as a hardware write-blocker/stabilizer.

Guardonix Standard Edition Advantages

Hardware write blocking – protection is not solely dependent on Windows or file system settings.
Protects source material from accidental data changes during analysis and imaging.
Stabilizes communication with unstable USB drives.
Can prevent Windows from disconnecting the drive due to read errors or synchronization issues.
Maintains independent connections on the host and source sides.
Can maintain an active connection to the computer even after the device under test is disconnected.
Automatically re-powers a source that has stopped responding.
Provides short-circuit protection for the device under test.
Enables manual power control.
Can operate without an additional power supply with most standard USB devices.
Logs write attempts, errors, and read operations, which is useful for documenting forensic processes.
Small, portable design.
Functionality can be expanded later with a Professional Edition Upgrade.bsequent analysis can be selected independently; Guardonix acts as a hardware write-blocker/stabilizer.

Standard Edition Disadvantages and Limitations

Only Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64 are officially supported; the manufacturer does not declare support for macOS or Linux on the product page.
The manufacturer's standard warranty is only 12 months. This is important, for example, in cases requiring a 24- or 36-month warranty.
The Standard Edition does not have a hardware-enforced, configurable Read Timeout; this feature is available in the Professional Edition.
In Standard Edition, the device automatically powers up after 60 seconds of inactivity; Professional allows for settings of 10, 30, or 60 seconds and utilizes hardware resets beforehand.
No flash acquisition acceleration feature available in Professional Edition.
No keyword search during imaging.
No Windows file system mount blocking feature available in Professional.
No advanced support for degraded/damaged SATA and NVMe SSDs. The manufacturer explicitly states that the Standard Edition algorithm is designed to handle issues specific to HDDs. Healthy SSDs can work in both versions, but the manufacturer provides the Professional Edition for damaged SSDs.
No limit on bad block read retries.
No configurable response to write attempts.
No graphical sector map or read speed chart.
No automatic power-off after a period of inactivity.
No access to the hidden HPA [Host Protected Area], DCO [Device Configuration Overlay], and AMAC areas; this functionality belongs to the Professional Edition and is subject to additional adapter restrictions.
